Blog and bike

After enjoying the blogs of many of my friends, I've decided to add my voice to the blog world, and give all you procrastinators something else to read, look at, browse, instead of doing the laundry, mowing the lawn, or grading papers. (I may be speaking from personal experience....)

So, here we go.

I've decided to name this page, "The Little Things," based on one my favorite quotes -- “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” (Robert Brault) Those of you who knew me in college know that I was big on the idea of simple pleasures and, though many things have changed since then, I still find it's those little things in life that seem to make all the difference.

Plus, the reality is this blog will likely be not so much breaking, unusual, unbelievable news, but musings and family updates from me, contemplating every day life in my corner of the world.

With that said, our big excitement this weekend was a trip to a garage sale where Caleb and I bought his first bike (the lady was willing to take 50 cents for it, but being the generous Dutch woman I am -- I handed over a whole dollar). The big wheels knock-off came complete with duct-taped blocks over the wheels (for the smaller peddlers) and a seat that is barely held into place with a couple of odd-fitting screws. It's amazing how excited a two year-old can get from doing what feels like stealing some other kid's toy right out of his yard. Caleb rode his bike down to the Jeep and jumped up and down while I loaded it into the back. As we drove home, he kept craning his neck over the back of his car seat to be sure it was still there. It was just one of those "too good to be true" moments in his life. And maybe for his mom, too. It only we all could be so content with the simple things.
